Engine: The engine was sourced from the Alfa 33 16v saloon in production at the time. It is based on the familiar 4 cylinder boxer (flat four) originally used in the “AlfaSud” cars of the 1970s and 1980s. By 1993 this engine featured 4 camshafts driving the 16 valves, 4 individual throttles and Bosch Motronic ML4.1 fuel injection, to generate 138bhp @ 6500rpm. The only modification allowed for its use in the Formula Alfa Boxer Europa was the installation of a dry sump oil lubrication system for positioning the engine very low in the chassis. It runs on ordinary 98 octane pump fuel.
Gearbox: Staffs 5 speed unit with “dog” M type gears designed for single seat racing cars. The Staffs Silent gearbox is very similar to the Hewland LD200, but is stronger. Staffs uses Mk5 M type gears on 1 1/8 inch spline layshaft Multiple ratios are available and a selection are for sale, allowing the car to reach up to 100 km/hr in 1st gear, and customised gear sets to suit different race tracks.
The brakes are standard Alfa 33 solid discs with Bembro 2 pot brake callipers as used on the Alfa GTV6. The brakes are the same for front & rear, and balance is achieved with twin master cylinders working through an adjustable (by the driver) balance bar.
The suspension features inboard mounted spring and shock “coilovers” working through bell cranks.

Formula Alfa Boxer Europa
So what is an Alfa Boxer Europa?
These cars are an evolution of a single seat racing car Alfa originally released in 1987. The first 100 cars were built by Alfa as a class for up and coming drivers on the European scene. Power was provided by the 1.7litre 8v engine from the then current 33 range, mounted behind the driver, with a close ratio gearbox hung out the back in typical single seater fashion. The series winner was offered a chance to drive an Alfa engined F3 car the following season.
Original Formula Alfa Boxer
With the arrival of Fiat on the corporate scene soon after, a decision was made to reduce the input the factory would have in maintaining the series, although Alfa Romeo would supply engines of the now updated multivalve type fitted to the new 33 “Nuova”. Private chassis builders could now offer cars built within a formula, and companies such as Tetus, Van Deiman, AlfaNord and Ermolli did just that. With this evolution of events, the Boxer Europa was born.
Many well know drivers including F1 World Champion Jaque Vullinerve, Tony Kanaan (Indycars) and Giancarlo Fisicella (F1) developed their careers in these Alfas. The cars have become extremely collectable, due to their rarity, especially by Japanese collectors.
Driver History: Started racing an 1978 AlfaSud Ti Series 1 at Manfield in May 1986. Raced the AlfaSud upto 1992 and still own this car. Started the AlfaSud Trofeo Series in 1990 now is Alfa Romeo Trofeo Series. Then purchased a Nissan Sentra GT and run in this one make series very successfully for 3 years. Afterwards slowly began building an new race car a 1982 AlfaSud Ti Series 3 from scratch. During this build period raced a friends AlfaSud Ti Series 2 a number of times until rolling the car at Taupo hairpin. Finally finished building the 1982 AlfaSud in 1999 with its first outing was driving to Christchurch for Southern Festival of Speed meeting. In 2000 installed a standard Alfa 33 16v motor using the Bosch factory computer into the AlfaSud and still running very successfully with a standard 16v motor. There is now a new class in the Trofeo series to run my Alfasud with a standard 16v motor.
